Autumn in Vesterålen: When the Arctic Starts to Change
Golden landscapes, darker evenings, and the feeling that something magical is just around the corner.
There is something special about autumn in Northern Norway.
The days slowly become shorter, the mountains begin to change colour, and the air feels a little fresher every morning. Here in Vesterålen, surrounded by mountains, sea, and endless stretches of wilderness, you can feel the seasons changing in a way that is difficult to describe until you experience it yourself.
And for us, this is all still relatively new.
A different kind of autumn 🍂
Coming from Belgium, we were used to autumn bringing rainy days, traffic jams, and the occasional beautiful afternoon when the sun decided to make an appearance.
Here in the north, autumn feels different.
The landscapes are enormous. The mountains rise straight from the sea, small fishing villages sit quietly along the coast, and there always seems to be another beautiful place waiting just around the next bend in the road.
Even an ordinary drive can turn into an adventure.
One moment, you are heading somewhere with a practical purpose. The next, you find yourself stopping to admire the view, taking photographs, or simply enjoying the silence.
Well, almost silence. When you have children, there is usually at least one person asking for a snack.

Getting ready for the Arctic winter ❄️
Of course, autumn is not just about beautiful landscapes and taking photographs.
It is also nature's way of reminding us that winter is coming.
The days are getting shorter, warm clothing becomes increasingly important, and the idea of stepping outside without checking the weather forecast starts to feel a little less appealing.
Living in Northern Norway means learning to work with the weather rather than waiting for perfect conditions.
A little rain does not necessarily mean staying indoors. A cold day does not have to mean a boring day. Sometimes, the most memorable moments happen when you put on your warmest clothes, head outside, and discover what the landscape has to offer.
We are still learning, of course. There is always another thing to prepare, another practical detail to figure out, and probably another piece of outdoor clothing we did not realise we needed.
But that is part of the adventure.

And then there is the Northern Lights ✨
For many people, visiting Northern Norway means one thing above all else: seeing the Northern Lights.
And honestly, we understand why.
There is something extraordinary about the possibility of looking up at the night sky and seeing green ribbons of light dancing above the mountains or reflecting the Arctic landscape.
Autumn also marks the return of darker nights, creating more opportunities to look for the aurora when the sky is clear and conditions are right.
Of course, nature does not work on a schedule. The Northern Lights cannot be guaranteed, no matter how carefully you plan your trip.
But that is part of what makes the experience so special. You have to slow down, be patient, and accept that the best moments cannot always be organised in advance.
And even when the sky stays dark, there is still something wonderful about being outside in the fresh Arctic air, surrounded by mountains and the sound of the sea.
Why we want to share this place with other families
One of the reasons we started FamiLYS Arctic Getaway was the feeling that Northern Norway has so much to offer families, beyond the famous sights and organised excursions.
It is about giving children the chance to explore nature, discover unfamiliar landscapes, and experience a place that feels completely different from everyday life.
It is about spending time together without needing to fill every minute with activities.
And it is about discovering that an adventure does not always have to be something extreme.
Sometimes, it is a walk along the coast. Sometimes, it is spotting wildlife, watching the clouds move across the mountains, or finding a beautiful little place that was never on your itinerary.
Sometimes, it is simply standing outside together and looking at the sky.
These are the kinds of experiences we want to help families discover here in Vesterålen.

A new season, a new chapter
As we continue building our life in Northern Norway, every season brings something new to learn and discover.
Summer introduced us to our new surroundings. Autumn is bringing changing landscapes, darker evenings, and the anticipation of the winter ahead.
And somewhere between everyday family life, new plans, and the occasional moment of wondering what we have got ourselves into, we are reminded why we chose this adventure in the first place.
We wanted more nature, more adventure, and a different way of experiencing life together.
We are certainly getting all three.
And we cannot wait to share more of this incredible part of the world with you.
Would you visit Northern Norway in autumn, or would you prefer to experience it under a blanket of snow? We would love to hear which Arctic season is calling your name.
Until next time, greetings from Vesterålen! ❤️
